Does your job search need a spring refresh?

This past weekend was a big one for my family. We celebrated my kid’s bat mitzvah here in Boston after months of planning and prep. It was a special milestone, and like any big event, it also came with a lot of behind-the-scenes organizing, coordinating, and yes, cleaning.

With everything now behind us and the house finally back in order, it feels a bit like a spring reset. And it got me thinking that this time of year is a great opportunity to take that same approach to your job search. In this week’s newsletter, I’m sharing a few ways to “spring clean” your materials and set yourself up for new opportunities.

Clean Up Your Linkedin.

LinkedIn is often the first place recruiters look. I will often share LinkedIn profiles with clients even before I see a resume and sample work product. Your LinkedIn should read like your resume, meaning you want details about what you accomplished – not just where you worked. Take some time to update it so it truly reflects your best self.

refresh Your Network.

Strong networks don’t just happen, they’re maintained over time. In other newsletters we’ve talked about the importance of having and maintaining a really strong network. People often find jobs through connections, not necessarily through job boards. Just like you bring your bike in for spring tuning once a year, you want to make sure you are giving your network regular attention. Send them a general update on how it's all going. Check in on their job search or a priority project they’ve been working on. The key to a network is to keep in touch with people outside of times when you need them to do things for you.

Freshen up your professional photo.

We’re seeing more candidates move toward business casual photos, which feels more current and approachable. If your photo feels outdated, consider swapping in something more recent. Once you find a new photo, update your LinkedIn and email icon. Shout out to Shoott, where I’ve done affordable headshots (not an ad).

Dust Off Your Resume.

Most people only tweak their most recent job experience, but this is a good time to revisit your entire resume. Look back at your previous experience with fresh eyes. Are you clearly telling your story and highlighting accomplishments? Are you including good data that points to your impact? Does your resume, as a whole, reflect the jobs you’re applying for? Swap with a friend and ask for feedback. My two cents is that people spend way too long on their resumes, but I think this is a good time to make sure it’s clean, current, and represents your current career goals. We have a couple short videos on Youtube on how to craft a strong resume.

That’s not all! We’re hiring for additional jobs and you can see all of them on the NRG website.

Launch Your Search Cohorts

Thank you so much to Kristin for this winter’s Launch Your Search Cohort! At one point I had four job interviews in three days, and I just accepted a job as manager of marketing & communications for [redacted labor organization]. I genuinely don’t think this would have happened without Kristin’s help. The difference between this and pre-’Launch Your Search’ search was night and day.
